英詩の鑑賞から創作へ

１ はじめに
新英研が積み上げてきた実践の一つが、この英詩である。日本のあちらこちらの学校で、英詩が作られ、報告されてきた。私の生徒の作品を、一つだけ紹介すると、
The Four Seasons

Because it is comfortably warm

I like summer best
Because I can swim

I like fall best
Because it is cool

Because it snows
４季を歌った簡潔な詩で、イラストが楽しい。今まで私は良く生徒の作品を文集にして、発表会を開いた。
２ 英詩を取り入れる意味
英詩を授業で扱うのは、どんな価値があるのか、私は次の５つにまとめられると思う。
１ 短かくて、イメージが広がり、想像力・創造力を育む。
２ リズムがあり、同じ文型の繰返しも多く、記憶しやすい。
３ 短いので、時間の余ったときなど投げ入れで使える。
４ 鑑賞をもとに、自己表現を詩の形で促しやすい。
５ 文集化して、海外との交流に使える。
英詩を外国語教育に生かすためのハンドブックには、こう書いてある。
1. Poetry is the type of English which touches our personal feelings most
closely.
2. Poetry can help us to assimilate the typical rhythms of a language.
3. Poems are often very easy to remember. They stick in our minds without
conscious effort.
4 . The topics which poems talk about are in themeselves interesting--and
important.

３ 英詩の鑑賞
まずは、インプットが大切。平易で実感のこもった英詩を選んで学習したい。英語通信に毎回１編の詩を載せるのも、一方法だろう。
いくつか例を示そう。
(a) SPRING
Spring is coming,
Spring is coming,
I know it,
I know it,
I know it,
Light again,
Leaf again,
Life again,
Love again.
進行形の学習、春の季節にぴったり。形をまねて、それぞれの季節の詩を作ることができる。
(b) WE HAVE LIVED AND LOVED TOGETHER

We have lived and loved together
Through many changing years;
We have shared each other's gladness,
And wept each other's tears.
現在完了形の学習用。友情がテーマになっており、自己表現の誘い水になる。
(c) BRIDGES

If I were a builder,
I'd make big bridges,
Bridges to far away lands:
To Asia, Africa, South America,
Bridges to Europe, Iceland, Iraq.
I'd walk round the world
To visit the people,
And when we shook hands,
We'd make little bridges.
仮定法の学習に最適。国際連帯の気持ちを育てる。

作者は、アメリカでポピュラーな女流詩人。心を分かち合える友達がテーマ。不定詩の学習に利用できる。
４ 詩的自己表現へ
Kenneth Koch氏は、アメリカの小学校で、英詩の創作を指導した結果を"WISHES,
LIES, AND DREAMS" ( A VINTAGE BOOK )に著している。
その中で、詩的自己表現を実践する具体的方法を示している。テーマをいくつか拾うと、
Wishes / Comparisons / Noises / Dreams / Metaphors / Lies / Colors などをあげている。
I wish.....という形で書かせるとか、好きな色を選ばせて、Pink makes me happy.などと気持ちを表現させるなど、アドバイスを与えている。
その中から一つだけ、color poemを紹介すると、
Red

Red is the color of sweetness.
Red is the sun rising.
５ 終わりにーー英詩実践の体系化を
新英研でも、そろそろ英詩の鑑賞から創作までの実践を体系化し、実際の教室で追実践が可能なように、「英詩学習ファックス資料」が作られても良いのではないだろうか。
そして出来た作品を文集化して、クラスで発表会を開くだけでなく、global educationの一環として海外にも送り異文化交流の材料にしたい。パソコン通信に載せて、世界各国の学校と交流するのも夢ではないだろう。
